What is Biochemistry?

Biochemistry, pronounced as, /bʌɪə(ʊ)ˈkɛmɪstri/, is a branch of science that deals with the biological and chemical processes occurring within every living organism.

It is, therefore, sometimes called biological chemistry

It is a science seeking to describe the structure, organization, and functions of all living matter in molecular terms.

Professionals who studies and deals with biochemistry are known as biochemists.

Some of the kinds of questions asked by biochemists are:
  • What are the chemical structures of the components of living matter?
  • How do interactions among these components give rise to organized supramolecular structures, cells, multicellular tissues, and organisms?
  • How does living matter extract energy from its surroundings in order to remain alive?
  • How does an organism store and transmit the information it needs to grow and reproduce?
  • What chemical changes accompany the reproduction, aging, and death of cells and organisms?
